The Olympics are an opportunity for London. They also pose a threat to its safety and security. While the experience of previous events has shown that good planning can deliver a trouble-free games, the threat of international terrorism demands a whole range of innovative security measures, and a collaborative approach from business and government. The speakers will consider the security challenges posed by the Olympics and the lessons that can be learned from Beijing, Athens and Sydney. |

They are the first in a series of breakfasts organised jointly by the IPT and the University of Warwick's International Security Initiative, bringing together policymakers, researchers and businesspeople to discuss the security issues that pose critical questions to both government and industry now more than ever before. |

SPEAKERS |
Richard Lambert has been Director-General of the CBI since 2006. He is a former editor of the Financial Times and currently Chancellor of the University of Warwick.
Christina Scott is Head of the Civil Contingencies Secretariat in the Cabinet Office. She previously spent three years as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister with responsibility for BIS, DECC, DEFRA, DfT and civil contingency issues. She has also previously held roles in the Treasury, Cabinet Office, Department for Transport and at the European Commission.
Professor David Wilson is Acting Dean of Warwick Business School and Professor of Strategy at the University of Warwick. His research interests include extreme uncertainties such as terrorism.
Robert Raine is Director of Olympic Safety and Security in the Home Office. His work at the Ministry of Defence and Cabinet Office has included the Commonwealth Games, the Wembley Stadium, ID cards and counter-terrorism.
Derek Wyatt MP has been Labour MP for Sittingbourne and Sheppey since 1997. He chairs the Olympics and Paralympics all-party parliamentary group and is a former PPS to Margaret Hodge at DCMS. |
